What happens in a small group music therapy session?
The Board Certified Music Therapist designs each small group session according to the needs and strengths of the members of each group. This may include playing an instrument with a friend, requiring collaboration and turn taking, listening skills and impulse control. This may include moving through a sensory obstacle course in teams or one at a time, practicing turn-taking and teamwork with coordination and following directions. Maybe group members are really motivated by a favorite singer, to the therapist may lead the group in re-writing lyrics to express each group members ideas, building communication, speech, and conversation skills. There are many ways that we can use music to facilitate LEARNING and FUN at the same time!
If ITNC does not have a group that best fits the age, location, and needs of you or your child, we would be happy to work to develop the perfect group! Please contact us below to see if we have or can build a small group that fits perfectly!
Why try a small group?
Small group music therapy can be a motivation, fun, and interactive way to practice social interaction alongside other developing skills. We use instrument play, movement to music, songwriting, improvisation, and/or singing to practice working together collaboratively with peers. Groups can also serve as a catalyst for generalizing functional skills like attention, following directions, communication, or movement out of the one-on-one therapy room and into everyday interactions.
